Usually we use this space to talk about industry issues and trends that might affect our fleet clients’ success, but today, I want to bring your attention to Lytx®, or more specifically, our new Lytx Video Services℠ program, because it represents a new era in our industry.
For nearly two decades now, Lytx clients have been using video with our DriveCam® program to help their fleets improve safety and reduce claims costs. It’s been highly effective at pinpointing and addressing risk, both for organizations that want to take their stellar safety programs to the next level and those that had previously been at least compromised by, and in some cases crippled by, poor safety records.
We chose video because we know its power. The biggest advantage of video is its service as proof. It tells with clarity and objectivity what really happened in a driving event so that you’re adequately defended, and so that your drivers are given a better understanding of their safety performance on the road.
We learned a lot in those first few years. We worked really closely with clients to define practical workflows to take advantage of the video, because before our DriveCam video safety program, video didn’t have a place in driver management. We were always asking, “how do we make it easier for our clients to take advantage of video?” The simple answer was to review the clips for our clients and use our powerful data analytics to deliver the right video clip at the right time to help improve safe driving behavior.
Now, with the Lytx Video Services program, we’re using video to tackle broader fleet management problems involving operational efficiency, fleet productivity, security, and more. The Lytx Video Services program allows you to connect up to a dozen auxiliary cameras and record about 100 hours of video to generate proof of what really happens when your vehicles are out on the road. One client who evaluated the program for us called it “DriveCam with magic.”
One of the critical features we had to deliver was a way to make it really easy to find and download only the clips you want, without having to burden your operations team with scouring hours of video.
We do that with a very clever and intuitive cloud-based workspace that allows you to proactively organize your video with searchable tags associated with specific video triggers, like arm lifts on waste trucks, or doors on buses or even with third-party applications like fleet tracking.
The Lytx Video Services program may be added to the DriveCam program for our clients who are already using video to help improve driver safety. And with that, the Lytx Video Services program will continue to have exception-based video capture on the driver-facing inside lens, meaning that video is only captured with the inside lens when a driving event occurs, like a hard brake or a sudden swerve.
There are countless use cases for the Lytx Video Services program, not just in going back to a critical moment in time, but in being there in real-time through the live stream option.
Three years ago, going into 2015, though we were growing at a healthy clip, we were still facing some headwinds in the adoption of video as a fleet tool, but something changed that year. We went from headwinds to tailwinds, and fleet managers really caught on to the value of video. We think this next year is going to be just as important, with this next evolutionary phase in using video.
