American Central Transport’s Hours of Service (HOS) score is at 11 percent, well below the Department of Transportation (DOT) 65 percent intervention level, but this achievement didn’t happen overnight, according to Brandon Leininger, director of Risk Management for American Central Transport (ACT).
“In 2014, our crash scores were above alert status and we had a DOT audit for our share of accidents,” said Leininger, who sat down with us recently to share his experience with Lytx® Compliance Services. “At ACT, we’re ‘by the book.’ We want to attract and retain good, quality drivers, and we have a culture of continuous improvement.”
That led to a desire to find the right tools to help improve DOT compliance across the board, and ACT chose to adopt Lytx Compliance Services in addition to its video telematics solution.
“The ELD mandate next December evens the playing field and it’s healthy for the industry. But in pursuing compliance, the dynamic between drivers has changed. It’s shifted from a lone-wolf mentality to being part of a team,” said Leininger, adding that safety is a shared value.
Leininger said Lytx Compliance Services help expose risk they weren’t able to see before.
“[Lytx Compliance Service] flags individual drivers who are previous violators of a particular rule so we can focus coaching on the driver to prevent further violations,” he said. “I can find and track drivers by DOT rules and violations, to help me prioritize what issues need to be addressed first.”
He added that Lytx’s scalability and depth of information made his life and transition to dealing with DOT compliance easier and smoother. In fact, he added, “Our senior management loves the [compliance] and [Driver Safety] programs. They can spot trends, and see which issues pop to the surface. The combination has proved to be powerful.”
